Our client in Boston, MA is seeking an Assistant Controller to join their team. As the Assistant Controller, you will be responsible for the completeness, accuracy and integrity of the company’ s general ledger.  You will also be responsible for continuously improving and managing the daily, weekly, monthly and annual processes and internal controls of the finance department. These include the annual financial audit, the annual budget, the monthly close, and numerous financial reports to both internal and external parties. Apply today!

Responsibilities for the Assistant Controller:

Finance Operations Leadership

  • Oversee optimal daily operations of the finance department
  • Manage and improve monthly and annual general ledger close processes
  • Manage annual audit process, including coordinating testing, managing preparation of work papers, and preparing footnotes and the annual budget process
  • Establish, maintain and improve financial internal controls within the department and perform annual program internal audits
  • Ensure the accuracy and timely distribution and analysis of internal financial reports
  • Manage the general ledger, including: assigning new codes, developing new financial reports, and performing periodic software updates and enhancements
  • Manage the company’ s insurance incident reporting and participate on the company’ s Health and Safety Committee
  • Manage the company’ s property leasing and payment processes
  • Oversee and support the company’ s social enterprise accounting and reporting requirements
  • Review and approve weekly AP documents and checks runs
  • Coordinate the lease, purchase and accounting of vehicles with the company’ s Vehicle Fleet manager
  • Responsible for security of Finance office
  • Responsible for off-site storage of historical financial records
  • Supervise, hire, evaluate, develop and advance the skill and capability of direct reports
  • Coach, train, and re-train direct reports in the moment and on a per-project basis to support staff’ s growth
  • Implement and maintain all approved PSI’ s regulatory, personnel, facilities, operations, financial policies, protocols and procedures
  • Hire employees through the appropriate company policies and procedures
  • Ensure that all Human Resource policies and procedures are appropriately communicated, followed, documented and evaluated for all direct reports
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations of all assigned finance staff
  • Provide consistent leadership and supervision of direct reports, delegating appropriate work as needed
  • Participate in finance, administrative and agency meetings of supervisors and staff 
  • Provide frequent opportunities for staff to share their ideas and input
  • Manage, hire, and develop the Finance internship program, working with Human Resources to identify internship sources
  • Provide support to the Payroll Administrator, through assignment of appropriate staff
Requirements for the Assistant Controller:
  • Bachelor’ s Degree in Accounting
  • CPA and/or MBA
  • 4 years of experience as an accountant
  • 2 years of management or supervisory experience, including training, evaluating and advancing staff members
  • Previous experience working in a non-profit environment or governmental agency
  • Previous experience working with $25M - $30M budgets or higher
  • Previous experience developing and managing process and procedure changes within a finance department
  • Prior experience preparing for and supporting independent financial audits
  • Demonstrable experience driving strategy and initiatives to improve controls and processes in an financial department
  • Strong computer skills with excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and general ledger software
  • Systems orientation in managing software implementations/upgrades
  • Experience working in or familiarity with not-for-profit social services industry
  • Experience with government contracting accounting requirements and Massachusetts’ Uniform Financial Report (UFR)
  • Prior experience with Abila MIP general ledger software or similar non-profit general ledger software
  • Ability to travel to various programs as occasionally needed
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
