Our client in Waltham, MA is seeking a Senior Tax Manager to join their team. As the Senior Tax Manager, you will be responsible for providing advice and guidance to several business units; helping identify and streamline ‘ best practices’ in federal and multi-state tax fuels tax compliance. This position will also supervise tax analysts and be responsible for meeting all federal, state and local fuels excise/ sales tax filing requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of motor fuel excise tax, as well as strong analytical skills and an ability to manage multiple priorities and manage statutory deadlines. Responsibilities for the Senior Tax Manager:
  • Lead all motor fuels excise tax activities, including: review of all federal, international, state and local motor fuel excise tax returns and associated support, etc.
  • Oversee and support tax engine maintenance
  • Manage the implementation of the company’ s motor fuels tax filing software
  • Responsible for the supervision of the exemption certificate management process
  • Oversee the maintenance of required fuels tax business licenses and associated bonds
  • Manage federal and state audits by gathering and preparing all necessary documentation and correspondence
  • Manage internal audit requests; support and prepare fuel tax related internal control (SOX) compliance
  • Interact with customers, suppliers and internal business associates to address and respond to internal and external excise tax inquiries
  • Provide timely, comprehensive excise tax advice, support and training to tax professionals and internal business units
  • Monitor laws, regulations and rulings in motor fuels excise taxes and fees. Analysis and research of federal and state excise tax matters
  • Keep current on relevant statutory/regulatory and/or technology changes to identify and implement necessary changes and best practices, including opportunities for process improvements
  • Responsible for the supervision, training, support and mentoring of tax analysts
  • Maintain and comply with the highest degree of professional standards, customer confidentially and personal conduct

Requirements for the Senior Tax Manager:
  • Bachelor’ s degree in Accounting, Taxation, or related field preferred
  • Knowledge of GAAP, taxation compliance, codes and regulations
  • Minimum 5-7 years’ experience in multi-state sales and use tax, excise tax, and/or motor fuel tax matters preferred
  • Experience performing tax research using tax services such as CCH, RIA, BNA, etc.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, think independently and problem solve in a results driven team oriented environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer and technical skills including Microsoft Office Applications; Advanced Microsoft Excel skills preferred
  • Ability to provide team support to ensure that all deadlines are met, working overtime when necessary
  • Experience with AvaTax Excise, Right Angle, PDI and/or Oracle is a plus
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
